Renewable energy sources should be fully tapped not only meet growing energy needs but also to protect environment and scale down use of petrol and diesel, said Central Electro Chemical and Research Institute Acting Director Vijaya Mohan K. Pillai.
He was inaugurating a national conference on renewable energy utilisation - Indian perspective held at Gandhigram Rural Institute at Gandhigram on Thursday.
The country's energy need has been growing high. Renewable energy sector growth in the country in the last four years has been significant including electricity generation from renewable resources. The need to increase the use of renewable resources for sustainable energy development was recognised in 1970s. Significant thrust has also been given for research, development and induction of renewable energy technologies in different sectors, he added.
Biomass was available abundantly at rural areas. It could be tapped efficiently to generate power. With depletion of fuels, hydrogen will become an ultimate fuel to the world. The IOC had started a hydrogen platform.
“We should scale down use of energy resources from hell like petrol and diesel and start using energy resources from heaven like solar and wind.” Conferences should chalk out plans on what can be done in next five years to meet our energy needs. Such work will be extensively useful to the society, he added.
Releasing a souvenir, CSIR Chief Scientist M. Jayachandran said solar energy conversion through silicon solar cells has reached heights of technological advancement. Thin films of semi-conducting nature have been considered for making thin film solar cells. Semi-conductor films could be used as composites in combination with some organic conducting polymers to develop different type of solar cells like solid state solar cells, photo electrochemical solar cells and dye-sensitised solar cells and organic solar cells, he added.
GRI Controller of Examinations M. Sivaraman said renewable biomass energy has been playing a decisive role in the present world energy structure. It was essential to tackle utilisation of abundantly available renewable energy sources such as biomass energy, solar and wind energy, he added.
