refer to his friend, and not his spouse. With the passage of time,
‘better half' acquired a totally different meaning. It was used to refer
to an individual's soul. By the time it was borrowed into English, the

Since the word sounds fancier than ‘beginner', it is now common for many

users of the language, however, object to this. They contend that
‘neophyte' should be used only in the context of religion. The word
