VIJAYAWADA, January 23, 2012Solar energy to power streetlights
Officials asked to take it up as pilot project in several areas
Streetlights in the city will soon glow with solar energy. The measure will also reduce the burden on the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation to some extent.
Municipal Commissioner G. Ravi Babu, who visited a few places on Saturday, directed officials to prepare estimation for installation of solar energy system that can be connected to the streetlights.
Mr. Ravi Babu instructed the officials to take up the project on a pilot basis in Girupuram Red Circle, Nimma Thota, and Errakatta Frezerpeta. Solar streetlights would be installed on hilly areas too.
The Commissioner asked the officials to prepare designs for installing solar streetlights from the hill tops to the main road. Electricity officials would fix the solar system to the existing poles.
After assessing the success of the project, it would be replicated in other areas, particularly slum and hilly regions.
With the State staring at severe power crisis, solar energy is sure to provide some relief. It will reduce the financial burden on the corporation, which is spending heavily on power charges annually.
The Municipal Commissioner also directed the officials to initiate steps to develop slums. He asked them to improve conditions in Ambedkar Nagar under the Rajiv Avas Yojana.
INNER RING ROAD
Mr. Ravi Babu asked VUDA officials to hold a meeting with residents for acquiring land for developing the inner ring road at NSC Bose Nagar.
